My next project is a .308 AR. The DPMS lower is built and waiting for the Aero Precision upper to be built. Hope I can snag an 18 or 20"barrel from BHW and finish it up. This will be a multi-purpose rifle so 24" is a bit long for my taste Any thoughts on mid-length vs. rifle length gas systems? After reading the other posts in this section I'm getting the urge to try another caliber. I like the .243 but I may have to look at something that works on the AR15 platform. I'll keep doing my research and saving my nickels.

I looked at the targets on a post on AR-15.com forum....very impressive. I'm intrigued. Does it use a standard magazine?

It uses a 6.5 mag. There are several places you can buy them. Just google 6.5 Grendel magazines.

Are you are using a .308 or .223 size lower? In the .308, a good alternate is the 260 Rem (308 case necked down to the 6.5 mm/,264 bullets). The 264 bullets have a high BC, offer great range and come in a wide range of weights and styles. You can also use the standard 308 magazines.
In the .223 size receiver, take a look the 264 lbc/6.5 Grendel. Again, uses the 6.5 mm bullets to achieve much greater range/energy over the .223. Very effective on varmints up to med/large game with the right bullet. Nosler makes a Partition bullet in 125 gr that performs well for hunting, and the new Hornady 123 A-max is a great "accuracy" bullet, as do the 120 and 123 Sierra matchkings. Does require a different magazine than the regular 223 ones.
As far as the gas system, I perfer the mid-length for 16 and 18 inch barrels, and the rifle length for anything over 18". The AR was designed with the rifle gas system for a reason, and the longer gas system is supposed to have a softer/longer "pulse" (a very non-technical description) and less pressure that is not as sharp an impoact on the gas key/BCG. More like a push than a sharp jab. If my memory serves me correct, there is 1/2 the pressure with the rifle length system over the carbine length-the mid length splits the difference. The longer gas system is also less stressful on the bolt and locking lugs. And for some, there is the "how it looks" issue to consider....

How about if we get enough petitions so the good folks at BHW make a 6.5 Creedmore chambering.
Is anybody interested in that caliber?

I looked at the .260, .264, 6.5 6.8 & 6x45. Cover your ears I'm going to blaspheme. I don't want another caliber to reload . I reload for 12 calibers already. I have the .243, .223 & .308 in my line-up already. But if I decide to branch out, I do like the new rounds I been seeing. Thanks for the input. It is fun to look and wonder. Dave

Last year I started to get more interested in the potential of a 260 improved due to simplicity and the fact that I have a truck load of 7.61x51 brass that can be worked out. I was thinking to push the shoulder slightly to the magical 30 degrees when I came across Bob Whitley's that had already done almost exactly what I had in mind.
So the ticket for me is 260 rem 30 improved. now the tricky part is to find or make the reamers and dies. If I can make this happen in a BH top of the line barrel that is my first choice. I have been offered an exclusive in a local magazine to write about a long range AR so this might be the one and I have a nice crew of HP shooters willing to participate in the project. In reality the firearms and shooting is just an excuse to go out to the club house to eat, drink some beers and play cards! LOL!
There are very few things (or maybe none) that this could do that the 264x47 or creedmore could not do better but a little extra edge and the option of readily available and plentiful baseline .308win brass makes this very attractive.
Don't get me wrong, the 260 is awesome but I think pushing the shoulder will cover some of the little voids it has very nicely.
