Not a rifle deal but I decided to try my hand at a bit of pistol shooting this weekend. They were holding the Arizona Senior Olympics at a range I shoot PPC at so being a Senior I figured I'd give it a whirl.
This was an L Match. 25 yards, freestyle run what you brung as to gear. Slow, Timed and Rapid Fire. My Ruger MK II that I wanted to use with a dot got sick yesterday and would not reset the trigger so it went to the shop. Of course it ran fine last week until I cleaned it!!
I pulled out a High Standard Olympic Rapid Fire 22 short gun that I had sighted in on Thursday on a whim as a back up. Little did I realize, until I got to the match, some of my ammo was so old , 30 + years BTW, the bullets were actually flaky and corroded!! Of course my PRACTICE ammo had been GTG when I shot it yesterday in the desert. When I was doing my sighters the gun locked up as it wouldn't chamber the grungy rounds!! Not Good.
Luckily for me I have enough experience to never go to a match with only one gun. I had grabbed a beat up old Colt auto I had up in the safe and had done some plinking with it when I was sighting in and function firing the HS yesterday. Of course you know I don't shoot that high dollar ELEY stuff in most of my pistols and used what any of us would have handy. HS Remington bulk HP's. I don't think this formal BE range had seen a box of that in a long time.
Well as the HS went down I grabbed the Colt and went at it Old School. 90% of the shooters, men and women, were shooting dots on their nice Pardinis, Hammeralis, and S&W's. I was there with my little four inch gun with irons having never shot it in a match for going on 30+ years.
So here is what I did:
This:
Was loaded in this:
And thanks to a very bad rapid fire string that I dropped a few to many in got me this:
I figured I did well for the handicap on the equipment as my main guns were down and I had to go to the third string. I felt like the Green Bay Packers coach filing in for his injured players at the end of the season. I hope I don't have to do that again next year as my depth as I kept going back future and further for another gun was about to run out with only two more viable.
Any way stepping up for a bit of Silver today was fun. The nice thing was the chance to compete with some new shooters ranging from Arizona and all the way to Canada. I also got a very strong suggestion that I load up the gun box and come down and shoot some formal 2700 BE in the near future.
We'll have to see about that. I hope you liked the story.
Greg
PS: I got a T-SHIRT!!!
