My new 20" standard profile 6x45 bhw barrel is on the way. I hope . anyways to the point... I was wondering what everyone else is having luck with as far as dies go. I see that rcbs is making a small base die and was wondering if with a bhw chamber is a small base die necessary? also as i lie in wait for my barrel i have become increasingly interested in the dragons head brake. Can i order this directly from bhw and just to confirm the size 1 will work with my 6x45 or will i have to go a size bigger?

No need for a SB die The chamber on a BHW 6X45 is not overly small and regular dies will work. I have used Hornady and Redding dies to load mine. I recommend spending the extra $$'s" and buying a Redding 223 Type S F/L sizer die. It uses bushings and will let you F/L size everything form 17/223 20 PRACTICAL, 223 and 6X45. You can use a Hornady seater die and be GTG. If you want the Hornady New Dimensions are cheaper than the regular RCBS dies in 6X45 and with their floating seater are superior IMHO to the RCBS. You need the TYPE 1 from Surplus Arms for your Dragons Head. No need to go larger. www.surplusammo.com/products/SA%26A-Dragon's-Head-Muzzle-Break.html Greg

Thanks for the quick answer GLSHOOTER. I should be squared away now....now all i have to do is wait. Do you have an opinion on the dragons head brake? good bad or ugly. love it/hate it? have any better suggestions for a bench/ varmint rig for a 12/28 thread? I just don't like or need the loud report from a traditional muzzle brake.

They are all LOUD and increase muzzle blast. By law anything that DECREASES the sound will be a suppressor an a $200 tax stamp to go with it. I don't shoot brakes on my pure varmint guns and would not recommend them on a field use only gun. My run and gun 3 GUN stuff has brakes but I need the shot to shot recovery time at a minimum. If you must have one the DH will be fine. Stay away from the competition types you see like the Cooley. Miculek and Clark. They will blow your ears off!! Greg

They do work and are defiantly quieter than a standard brake or flash hider. With all that being said. Unless you are shooting 3 gun, why even have a threaded muzzle? It does not do anything for accuracy and it is always going to make as much noise as a target crowned muzzle.

just for the extra options. I'm still looking for the best muzzle device that puts the gasses out upwards before the end of the brake or FH is reached. Here in the desert it doesn't take more than a few rounds when your shooting ground squirrels before you have to clean off your glass and your teeth from all the dust.

I run one n an M16 10" gun and they are very effective and don't send gas toward the ground. They are also quite small. Greg
