I just finished honing and polishing the FCG surfaces on my AR. I used a 1200 mesh DMT diamond hone and only honed until the original grinder scratches were almost invisible, moving the hone across the line of the original scratches. Then I polished them with green chrome compound on heavy bond paper on plate glass. They look good and all the edges are crisp. There was no appreciable removal of material.
Before this process, the trigger was gritty and the pull was inconsistent at best. Now you can feel the hammer camming back as you pull the trigger. There is a small catch right before the break, and then a very crisp break. I am happy with it and wanted to share my experience. It appears some dealers, PSA, Gissele, and others are offering this process from the factory now. As soon as my barrel gets here I can stop tinkering with everything and punch some holes.
