Ok guys and gals, what is it? Had a friend ask me this question the other day. He's interested in having an AR he can take hunting out west (elk and moose) and he wanted to know what would do best for power delivery out to 300 yards. I didn't have a clue so I'm leaving it up to you pros.
I told him he would probably have to consider moving into an Ar-10 platform but he really wants to know if there are any options for something he could use as an alternative upper for his 15 and still get the job done. Now I want to know too.

So I just clicked on the link about "family menagerie or you stuffed what" hoping to see some pics of family pets and grandmothers that had been taken to the taxidermist (not what that thread was about at all, btw) when I saw a pic of the 25 wssm. What the heck is that thing? Is there a 30wssm for ar15's? Just by looks it seems like that could be the ticket. Ejumacate me people! Or just post pictures of deceased family pets artificially curled up in front of the fireplace for all of eternity.

There is a 223 WSSM, a 243 WSSM and the 25 WSSM. Olympic Arms took the 25 WSSM case and necked it up to 30 caliber and calls it the 300 OSSM. Mike Millie of Dtech did 90% of the work in developing the 300 OSSM. Currently, unless you go the custom route, OLY is the only one selling WSM/OSSM uppers. Greg PS: the 25 WSSM would do a moose, it is equivalent to a 25-06, but the 300 is basically equivalent to a 30-06 and would be a better choice.

Awesome. Thanks for the reply. I will pass that along. Might even need one for myself.

You can always go for a "fiddy".
BMG uppers are available if you don't mind obliterating the elk. Beowulf is out there if you want something more manageable, although since I don't hunt, I dont really know how effective that round is.

We are making the 300 Remington ultra short mag in an AR10 And I have personally made a 500 S&W The great thing about an Ar platform is that you can build Almost anything then change it

The WSSMs using a different barrel extension and a "magnum" upper? Bolts would be more like or identical to those used in AR 10?
Talked to Master Yoda on the telephone and he was really into that 500 S&W! I thought I really wanted a .458 SOCOM or .450 Bushmaster, but man that 500 S&W. What a hammer on an AR 15 lower!

A lot of "fitting" went in to the OLY product. Maybe someone will make a competing top end some day we can all get. Greg

This is a very good question as more and more hunters are using and many more considering AR 15 platforms for big game.
As Greg stated, there are some great short cartridges which will feed through the confines of the AR 15 lower mag well. But, the cartridge case, case head diameter, and operating pressures are not compatible with the plain vanilla AR 15 upper receiver and BCG.
Given the standard AR 15 specs, what is the most powerful or plausible cartridge for use on big game animals. I know the cover, anticipated max range, and the size of the critter hunted will be key. We are not punching holes in paper or hitting steel.

If I were going away from the romper stomper WSSM's and wanted something well within the basic AR format requiring no upper alterations I would have to look at the 6.5 Grendel or if I wanted a big bore the SOCOM for a big hole in the end but you have to open the port on that one. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable guys on here that are more intimate with the standard sized kickers but that is the best I have. Greg

We are not punching holes in paper or hitting steel. This is an easy one to answer. If you want it in a factory available upper, with commercial ammunition this distinction goes to ( drum roll please ) the 450 Bushmaster. Rifles, uppers, ammunition and reloading components are all available from the big manufactures.
