How does this round perform out of an 18" barrel. I like the round due to its ability to throw the heavy bullets. I just started shooting my 24" and was coasting he bullets so I am no help on that one but it is shooting lights out at 500 yards for me. I have a 20" that I am going to start working with and will get you some numbers when I do that. Will it work well in an 18"? I think it would be fine but remember in any of these guns velocity is your friend. I would rather go to a longer barrel and lighter profile on any of these for hunting. I, personally, consider 20" as a minimum on any field gun I want to use and for big bullet throwers a 22" would be my call if I just had to. Ritch and I discuss these barrel lengths a bunch and he is pretty adamant how maneuverable and lively a standard length AR can be. I never though much about it as most of my new guns are running 24" but because of YOU I took a trip up to the reloading room and grabbed a couple of rifles I have been using that were handy. First up was a 243 700 Remington standard weight with a 21" barrel. OAL was a nominal 41.5". I then measured a 24" 700 Remington 223 custom varmint weight 223 I shoot and it came in at 44.5 nominal. The shorty is pretty lively and the varmint weight is definitely nose heavy and a tad SLR to use. The third stick I grabbed was my 243 LBC 24" BHW bull barrel. Length on this was 42" This one is a bit heavy thanks to the bull barrel weight but the standard profile 24" BHW barrels I have in 6X6.8 are much less nose heavy and are quick to the hand. On a 24" BHW AR I'm gaining 3 more inches of tube for 1/2 inch over the short 243 and equal to the Varmint 700 length barrel and still 2.5 inches shorter. What does that mean for me? I know that realistically my 24" velocities will be a minimum of 200 and more like 240 FPS higher than an 18" version. This will cut down my total long range usage buy maybe 50 yards. That may or may not matter depending on where you hunt but for me I like that extra cushion. Bullets that we are shooting out of these are not screamers until we start pushing the envelope. The 243 LBC is pretty much on the heels of the 243 Winchester but the format is a fun one to use. In summation, as I mentioned earlier, I would go with a 20" minimum, 22" is better and , for me 24" is the only weigh to fly. The profile choice will help on the whippiness and for a hunting gun you don't need the "truck axles" that I hump into the PD and F-Class fields. Greg

I agree with Greg. Go with at least a 20 inch barrel. I have shot the LBC out of an 18 inch barrel, and the muzzle flash is flat out impressive.
If I was to build one to hunt with I would have a warning lasered on the barrel. DO NOT SHOOT IN DRY GRASSY AREAS

Don't forget to order a bolt at the same time. A 20" with target crown is going to be about the same as an 18" with some kind of flash hider/brake on it. I'd rather have barrel

We currently do not offer a lightweight option for the 264 LBC.

You always flute the barrel to make it a bit lighter.
