I am building my first 6.8 and picked up one of your barrels. Do I have to use a BHW bolt? Can I use a DPMS or somebody else's bolt?
Thanks, Wade

No, you don't have to use a BHW bolt and our barrels are in fact DPMS compatible.

Kiz is right but would you put a Ford Mustang wheel with the Horsey on the cap on a Cobra or would you put one on that has the SNAKE on it!! Use of those other bolts may cause your rifle to develop a rash that MAY cause you to flinch!! Greg PS: You do realize this is all in jest, right?

Wade: According to the 6.8 cognoscenti, there are only two brands of 6.8 bolts strong enough for the long haul. - First is the one made by CMT and sold by Stag, PRI and maybe others. This is the one BHW lists on their web site (currently out of stock). - Second is the "superbolt" made by AR Performance.
All others, according to these SMEs, are simply ordinary 5.56 numbers with the bolt face hogged out. Apparently these lesser versions have a tendency to break at the higher pressures many 6.8 shooters like to pursue. I'm too new with the 6.8 to confirm or deny this, but I can confirm the 6.8X43 SPC one heck of a fine cartridge that brings the AR platform up to his power potential. - CW

You pretty well summed it up CW. CMT has been making the 6.8 bolts for quite a few folks. They started out on the right intention and hollowed out the 5.56 bolts prior to heat treating and anodizing. This keeps the metal in it's ideal hardness for the finished product. LMT went with an additional step and they call it the enhanced. I buy CMT and have no issues with the thousands of rounds of 6.8 to date. Unfortunately most of my rounds were fired prior to the two bhw barrels I currently have.
I still have yet to test the railed upper and the dependability it adds to the "lesser" bolts on the market. We shall see when the upper ever arrives.

Any new information on 6.8 bolts would be greatly appreciated. I just ordered a 6.8 BHW 16 inch barrel and would like to get the best/appropriate barrel for it.

Do you know why BHW stopped selling bolts? It would be nice to know what they recommend for their 6.8 barrels including the bolt carrier.

They stopped because logistically they make barrels and don't want to stock parts in general. I am using bolts from Aero and DPMS. You don't need a Super Bolt. BCG can be about any make. I have run DPMS Colt Aero Signature. They are all good unless you just want it coated the regular ones are fine. Greg

Thanks for the information. I thought a stronger bolt might be required for the 6.8.

I just received a 6.8 bolt from stag. Got it in about 3 weeks, so they are still putting products out in reasonable time. If you haven't ordered one yet i would recommend them.

I got my barrel yesterday. I am going with an AR Performance bolt as that was what I could get through my builder.

LWRC recently designed a 6.8 piston driven AR type system they are calling the six8.... they even worked with magpul to redesign a 30 round mag that is not backwared compatable with normal AR lowers (too wide)... anyway they do make a standard NiB coated bolt face they sell which is compatable with standard BCGs and AR chambers.... i went ahead and got one and am using it now. 40 rounds down range and no issue specific to the bolt itself, as a matter of fact the extractor is probably the stongest AR extractor i have ever seen (uses a dual spring system).

Is this the same 6.8 that is doing the FTE or is it in your other rifle? Greg
