Okay boys here is my first post and man is it a doozy. I am part way finished with my SPRish build, with a 18" midlength 5.56, and Im down to bolt and bolt carrier group. With the current panic Im still a few weeks out but my question is how does one check or obtain a good head space on a build? I know some companies bundle a barrel and head spaced bolt together. I am also torn between the Young National Match Chrome BCG and the JP full weight BCG. Any thoughts on either of those and my head space dilemma? This is my first AR so I'm pretty new to it all. The rest of the build is a Spikes lower, Geissele E trigger Ace Skeleton stock BCM gun fighter charging handle Seekins SP3R rail and a Nikon BDC scope(damn I wish I could afford a Nightforce). Thanks in advance guys and thanks

Thanks in advance guys and thanks This question comes up a lot. Use a quality bolt and don't worry about the head space. There is no way for you to change it. Head space is set during the manufacturing process. It is a combination of chamber depth and the positioning of the barrel extension. It is NOT adjustable. Your choice of a Young BCG is a good one. I have several in some of my uppers. The rest of your build sounds well thought out. Keep us updated as it comes together.

Ritch is right on. To check it you could obtain some Head Space Gauges from Brownells or other sources. Be advised though that from maker to maker there may be as much as 0.005 variance form big to small. This is within factory SPECS but can be disconcerting. The big boys, I'm a little guy, buy a quality bolt and put it in a quality barrel and go win matches. Most aren't checking head space.

Hey guys thanks for the quick knowledge boost. I was a little iffy about the head space thing. I think I'm set on the JP BCG it goes a little above and beyond the Young in innovation and I've shot a few JP game guns and man were they slick. I will keep ya'll up to speed with my build as I finish her out.
