I have a BHW 6.5 LBC 24" barrel that I love on my LBC AR15. Now that I have made the leap from .223 to other calibers for the AR, I have been looking at the 6mm Hager. Does BHW chamber anything that would be an equivalent to this cartridge?

Does BHW chamber anything that would be an equivalent to this cartridge? This one is a nagger. It looks good on paper in some vneues and then when we apply it outside those parameters one starts looking at the mirror asking why? This is a prevuous thraed that wandered around but hit the high points. HAGARThe H.was designed for only one purpose. 600 yard High Power palin and simple. It is, of ,used in the shorter yardages for across the course High Power but was not looked at as a game hunting cartidge. The single loading at 600 lets the shooter utilize the bigger 30 Remington case capaicity but when we back down in range the bullets have to be crammed in the case to fit the magazine. The 6X6.8 can be loaded long and maybe gives up 75 FPS at 600 with the single shot loadingss but when we start eating up case capaivity at under 2.300 loading the 6X6.8 steps right back up toe to toe with the H. Performance wise I have sho tthe 6X6.8 and 243 LBC, same case capaity BTW, at 500+ a great deal. On target I saw no basic differnce in score but the extra velocity of the 6X6.8 can pay off in wind drift thanks to the higher pressures we can run. Theoretically brass has become available for the H. but it is not now nor will it ever be as common as its 6.8 offspring. If you want to go hunting the 6.8 case necked to6 MM makes a great deal more sense and as I said for 600 it is only a click or two differnce on the sights in playingthe HP game. . Now I am speaking to the AR platform in this case. A bolt gun with a longer magazine lenght limitation would certainly out perform the 6X6.8 but would it make that much differnce? That is a close call but one that the shoter would have to decide. Factory ammo is availabe for the 6X6.8 in varmint weights but I do not believe the same is so for the HAGAR. My choice would be a 6X6.8 vs the H. for day to day real world non-turtleback wearing shooters. Greg

GLSHOOTER Thanks for the heads up! This is the kind of info that I have come to expect @ BHW forum. I didn't realize that the cartridge was being loaded one at a time in the 600 yard game. Your explanation makes perfect sense. I have been swayed from the Hager to the 6X6.8. I appreciate the time and effort in your reply. Now my question is, who makes dies for the 6X6.8? I haven't been able to find them as of yet.

Howdy!
I shoot a 6x6.8 so I can give you some info on the dies. This was my first go 'round with bushing dies and it was a breeze. The preferred die is a Redding Type-S 6.8 SPC FL bushing die. The die doesn't come with a bushing to set neck size so you will buy the ones you need to neck down to 6mm in two steps. The first step is done with a .285 size Redding or Wilson bushing. You then neck down the rest of the way with a .267 Bushing. Forming the brass is the easy part, working up a load is when the fun/work begins.

Last I checked MidSouth had the dies in stock. We also like to use a Redding 223 bushing style decapping assembly with the change over. The same die lets us load 6.8, 6.5, 257, 6, 22 and 20 just with bushing changes. Greg

gaberelli & GLSHOOTER Thanks for the heads up. I will check with Mid South to see if they are still in stock. It would never have occurred to me to use this option. Some times I have a hard time thinking outside the box. The solution is so simple, I was just over thinking it. I use the Redding type S bushing dies for my 6mmBR & 6.5mm X .284 and have been very happy with them! So what die are you using for the seating die? Thank you both for your input

Just checked Mid South and they are out of the Redding FL type S bushing dies. Just looked at Midway. They say back in stock 3/7/14. About what it takes to get your barrel.
