My side charge upper receiver arrived a couple of days ago. I am looking forward to getting the BHW barrel. I think the next purchase is going to be either the free float tube or the HiperFire trigger. Any recommendation on a free float tube. I am only going to put a bipod on it so I don't need a bunch of rails. On the economical side, not cheap made.

Hello: I would take a look at Battle tested Equipment for a hand guard and trigger Carl

THe bottom one is a BTE tube on one of the new BHW Victory Barrels in 223. Get with George and tell him BHW and Greg sent you. Lots of options and he does ceracote to if you want to get fancy. www.bte-usa.comGreg

The upper is now built (1-17-2015). Now I need to make the ammunition. 22" Black Hole Weaponry 6x45 1:8 twist New Frontier side charger upper receiver Adams arm XLP piston kit Voodoo tactical Bolt and firing pin Cheap Ebay free float carbon fiber forearm (It just barely fits I think. The op rod has clearance the op rod spring is real close.) Dragons Breathe brake

That'll work. Congratulations on a nice build.

Would the carbine length ( I think) buffer tube and buffer cause a short stroke on ejection? The adjustable piston rifle length system was open all the way. It ejects the shell but does not pick up a new round. I am borrowing the lower from my Ruger 556. Where do I start looking?

If it ran a 5.56 it will run with a 6X45. I would look at your gas-piston system. Is the port aligned? Is the gas port on the barrel large enough to operate the piston system? Is your operating rod touching anything? Is your new bolt carrier and bolt lubricated enough? It does sound like its under gassed. Another option would be "Drill the gas port" You are using an adjustable gas system, so turning it down would not be a problem. I personally would rather have an over sized gas port. I use adjustable gas blocks on all of my own uppers. This way I can always tune the gas volume to the cartridge.

That is a really good looking build. Hope you get it worked out. Sometimes they can be finicky.

I run an Adams Arms piston on my 6x45. What load are you using?
Mine would not cycle with lower end loads(under gassed), but as I got toward the middle of the velocity range, it ran perfectly. As I loaded to max and slightly above max to achieve the best accuracy (thank you GLShooter for that tip. You were spot on) I have gotten into an overgas situation. You could be having a similar situation.
If the return spring is touching the top of the hand guard, then that could cause the op rod to bind, but check the load first.

I am using the Overall Charge Weight (OCW)method to narrow down a load for the 6x45. I ran out of daylight for my last 6 to 9 shots on RL15 as far as using the chrony. I wished I had brought a proper rest to test the different loads. But I think I have some answers. Reloader 15 I shot the target above but it was in the black dot area. I ran out of daylight for the chrony. Reloader 15 work up H4895 groups

All the primers (cci400) flatten but did not crater. I am going to try the br-4 I have on hand and get some rem 7 1/2s to see if there is a difference.
Is Federal brass the same brass as Lake City just with the Federal head stamp? Which brass would be ideal to get, if I were to buy it? (future purchase)
Are the velocities in a normal range for the powders used? Are they high, low or good? What velocities should I try to get? 2700, 2800, 2900, or 3000?
87 gr BTHP Tac at 24.5gr @ Error, 2652, 2681, (Some case capacity left) H4895 at 25.7gr @ 2885, error, 2780 (compressed almost topped off) RL-15 at 25.7gr @ 2685, 2709, 2647 (last good read group) compressed RL-15 at 26.0gr @ ?9390?,2669, 2605 (lower velocities? and Error? due to lighting) (compressed)
To me the H4895 looks like the powder to use. The Federal brass is almost topped and 1% above published max data. But I would like educated opinions please.

I expect around 2850 with a 22" barrel and the 87's. Your RL15 loads are considerably lower than what I would expect. MIne are 2770 extapolated down from a 24" Don't be afraid of compressing the 15 or the 4895. Your speeds are about what I would expect at your load levels.
LC and FC brass are not the same in the 223. LC is better for hardness and longevity. I use Rem. 7 1/2's exclusively in my 6X45.

RJohnson,
the gas port is .100 should I open that up to .110 or more? If so drill or reamer?
TexasBob,
I have remove material away from the spring and bushing. It was close enough to it to possibly interfere upon recoil. Thanks for the advice. Where in Texas are you?
Glshooter thank you for your advice and information as well.
