Hi all- my first post here.
I am considering an AR build in the 7mm-08. I want something different than a 308, and the 7mm-08 seems like a nice cartridge. I've never personally shot it.
It looks like the only twist rate available for BHW barrels is 1:10. According to research I've done, this seems a tad on the slow side. My primary purpose would be target shooting and whitetail hunting. I want to consider the possibility of having this rifle also suitable for elk. Never know...a guy can dream. Most recommendations are for a 1:9 twist.
So, most of the time, 120-140 grain bullets would be used, but want the option to go heavier with confidence. Getting into the 160 and 175 grain bullets makes me unsure of the slower twist.
Can BHW make these in a faster twist?
Any thoughts?

The twist will handle most usable bullets. Shooting 160-170's while good BC will not really have the velocity that you could put to use. A 140 will handle any elk you see with a good Partition or the new monolithic types. No faster twist is available last time I checked. I know from experience the BHW polygonal bores appear to handle heavy for caliber/twist rates and we seem to be able to stabilize a bit more than the predicted show. Possibly a side effect of the higher velocities kicking in and less pressure. Greg

what weights would be preferred to shoot out of a 1:9? I.personally would stop at 140. You could go bigger with that twist. My pill of choice would probably be around 130. I like the extra velocity myself Greg.

My barrel showed up yesterday. Finished getting my upper all together today. I'm going to try to hit the range tomorrow.

Jasonsbeer when I was thinking about reloading for my 7mag I thought maybe a 120 grain would be to light. My gun dealer said " Brad how many Elk are taken with a 120gr out of a 270 ". Ballistic on a 270 & 7mm-08 are close. I use a Barnes TTSX 120gr in both my wifes 7mm-08 and my 7mag. I like the Barnes, they're a bonded bullet but when they hit they split into four petals like a broad head on an arrow so they have good stopping power. I haven't shot an Elk with the 7mm-08 but I've taken Elk at 500yards with the 7mag. 7mm-08 doing 3051fps 7mag doing 3600fps. Want to build an AR 7mm-08 when I figure out how to make it with a wood stock so it's not so ugly.
