I have to say that I have been a fan of what Black Hole Weaponry has been doing for quite some time, now. Today, I was poking my head in looking for some information on something, and saw a question that I could answer, so I had to take the plunge to sign up for the forum.
The three groove polygonal rifling is a concept that I have been absolutely in love with since the first time I heard of it. Before I knew BlackHole was doing them, I often wondered why no one was. I live in Montana, and followed Dan Lilja's work involving his testing of 3 groove rifling as a way of increasing barrel life. I also knew that HK was using polygonal rifling in their military rifle barrels for the same reason. Who would have thought of combining the two? Myself and BlackHole Weaponry, that's who!
Looking beyond the 3 groove polygonal rifling, I usually prefer to support in state businesses (all of my receivers are SI Defense, which now goes by the name of Falkor). So, what finally made me take the plunge into Blackhole was something else they do that I have not been able to find anywhere else in the world: Wildcat chambered barrels without forcing a fully assembled upper or complete rifle package down your throat. Seriously, if any of you have tried to get a barrel or a matching barrel and bolt on their own, you know what I'm talking about. Convincing someone who has created that wildcat to sell anything short of a complete package is like trying to lobby a congressman to vote across the isle - something else that Montana gun owners have become a little too familiar with after having elected a California liberal who transplanted here to a federal Senate seat. I still don't understand how that happened.
Anyway, this summer I was looking for a 6mm in the ballistic ranges of a .243 Winchester that would fit in a smaller AR format. I saw the usual suspect of 6mmAR and 6mmTurbo from over in Pennsylvania, and the RAT from the central part of the country. I saw the 243 LBC in a few internet search results, but Les Baer's site was vacant of anything resembling information on it, and I thought it was a deceased project. Then, I found this forum and discovered that LBC had nothing to do with that chamber design, and that it was alive and well with BHW. I found plenty of information in this forum, and a ready to ship barrel in the store. Ta-da! I'm still working up loads on the cartridge, but I am definitely happy with it so far. Happy enough that when I saw a majestic (a word I don't use lightly, especially in reference to a species that I otherwise consider a plague upon the earth) coyote on the way home from work last week, I already was wishing that I had this rifle with me at that time.
