I dont know what's more impressive being able to sneak up on your shot to take it in less than a couple of feet or shooting it from over 1000 yard... I've taken a ram off a cliff from probably 500 yards.

I've taken a ram off a cliff from probably 500 yards. Yup, guess it depends on how to see it. Heck, I was listening to Gun Talk this weekend and Tom Gresham was interviewing Doug Koenig, Mr. Kick-Ass awesome shooter of everything. Apparently he has the ability to make a repeatable 1000 yard off hand shot. WTF? That's absolutely amazing...

Okay, I'm out to 224 yds... By the end of the summer I might be out to somewhere near the rest of you folks. I figure it's mostly because the coyotes will run at the sight of me... I'm also at the 10 post mark! Woo-hoo!

longest shot: 580 yards with a 6.8SPC on a SD P Dog. 1030 yards with a .308 on a SD P Dog, 525 yards on Colorado Coyote. 485 yards on 5X6 Colorado Bull Elk. I'll admit that the 2 long range P Dogs took a few rounds to walk them in. the Coyote and Elk were both one shot and out.
I'm to the point in my life where I either use a handgun or bow for the close stuff or reach out there when necessary.

So no critters past a buck fifty however, I have a backyard range set up out to 400 yards. Sighted in my 22-250 4 out of 5 times ringing my 5" spinners. No joke BONE stock Remmy 700 SPS Varmint 26" barrel and I also have this model in 308 as well. However haven't shot at 400 yards as I have only had it for a couple months and the timing is just off. My 308 right out of the box shot a .385 ctc with Hornady Custom 168gr. Haven't really shot much with my ar's accuracy wise I need to chuck my barrel and pick up a BHW!

I have been shooting long range for the last 20 years at least twice / year. My longest is 1134. I have seen others do 1380 the furthest. The year before last I killed a corzo(type of buck) in Sierra do Porto (North of Spain) at 973. In the same spot that is a favorite I have shot 810 and 930 across a canyon. Most are one shot bucks with a couple with two shots fired to a dead drop. Sometimes shooting cross canyon you have all sort of winds and all it takes one minute of elevation or windage to require additional shots. The idea is to shoot over better than under. I send either 300 winmag or 338 lapua mail form heavy bolt rifles. I also shot a rock chuck at 1080 yards.
With the AR-15 and even FA308 I stay within the 600-700 yards tops to assure ethical kills. I don't think that any long range hunt has been more challenging than some short range with some dangerous encounters, sometimes with soiling of the pants included. It happened to my brother in law Randy when we bumped in to a bear up in Maine.

Back about 15 years ago, I had driven over to eastern Montana to the ranch of a fella I knew. I had a Camper on the P.U. an drove out into the ranch land he had about 2 miles from his house. He told me where to park, in that in the morning I might see an antelope within 500 yards or so an I'd probably get a chance to sneak out of the camper and make a stalk and get a decent shot at about 300 yards.
Well as luck would have it, I woke up just at day-light, rolled over (sleeping in the top cab-over bunk) and looked out the small closed window next to my head. Yeah, you guessed it. There out about 400 yards was a "nice" (about 13 to 14 " horns) Buck Antelope just standing perfectly still and broadside as the sun was coming up.
My Sako Forester .243 with a 2 1/2 to 8 B&L scope was next to me and my Binocs. I very slowly and quietly slid the window open, put the pillow on the window frame, took a deep breath, let half out and touched one off (a 100gr Nosler Partition handloaded to 3100 fps). Being sighted in to be dead-on at 300, I held about 13 inches high over a point on his neck (1/3 of the way down from the top, and at a point where the neck starts to broaden out as it starts to join the front of the shounder. With a good solid rest, this has always been my favorite point of impact on antelope and deer..........96% of the time the bullet will catch the spine & animal will just fallover....If you miss the spine by a couple of inches, the hydrolic shock created by that Nosler Partition is almost as good as hitting the spine.....usually the animal will only run or walk off 20 feet or so and again just fall over.
In this case, after I shot, the antelope just disappeared from sight. So I figured he (a) is dead right there and the range grass is hiding him, or (b) I missed him clean and he's long gone. So, I got out of bed, got into my hunting clothes, made breakfast, filled a thermos of coffee, and after finishing eatin' breakfast, got on the 4-wheeler and drove over to the spot...........sure enough. there he was, laying stone dead in about 12" of range grass in a slight wallow, with a nice hole right in the neck---spine broke perfectly. What I really like about this is: no bloddy, messy Lung/heart area to clean out & minimal meat loss from the bullet doing it's damage.......Admittedly you've got to know where your bullet is going to hit at one of several ranges that you might encounter, and your rifle & load MUST be able to produce 5 shot groups of UNDER 1" at 100 yards. It was just short of 400 yards back to the camper. Obviously not all hunts are this easy and "luck" is not always this kind.

Nothing impressive for this crowd, but 375 yard kill on a spike elk with my old 7mm rem mag.

208 A - Max did a wonderful job
550 yds on rockchuck with Bushmaster match V in 5.56

Three years ago I shot a button buck whitetail at a ranged 205 yards. I used a Nikon range finder for the distance after the shot. The shot presented itself too quickly to range it first. One shot with my Model 70 Sporter Varmint .243.

My longest so far was 352 with a model 7 6mm rem on a doe, on a coyote it is 326 ranged with my Lieca. I shoot out to 700 with my 280AI on steel but have not had a chance to shoot more than a 100 on citters yet.

In an AR: California blacktail buck 382yds with my 6.8spc
Bolt gun: Got a 212lb sow pig at 856yds with my 30-06AI
I take shots at yotes out past 1000 but so far I am only 12 for 50 or so, and I usually have to pump so many rounds down there to get on them it dont count for much. They are a tough shot after the first round skips past them and they kick on the afterburner for mach 3!!!
