Handguns have been a major part of my shooting life. I started competing actively with them about 1976 in IHMSA pistol matches. Started out with a Model 29 and moved on to the XP 100's. I actually won my first shooting trophies at that sport. I have a myriad of examples that I have used for competition and general shooting. Maybe way more than any sane man needs but just for starts here is a pic of the one that got me started. A Dirty Harry 6 3/8". I'll get diarrhea of the fingers over this topic. A little history on the guns is always enlightening. I paid $300 for this one in 1974. Swapped the Pachymers in after many rounds at steel animals and decided the big wood grips had to go. I have had this one rebuilt twice from all the shooting. It now locks up like a bank vault and has a fantastic double action pull. I used this one in the NSL Laramie Shoot For Loot many times. Like Harry I used a "Special" load with the obligatory HKS speed loaders. I hope to see more on here and I'll throw a pic up of my other stuff gradually. Greg

My first handgun and the one I learned to shoot with was a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 Magnum. I bought is used in 1976 for $100.00. Over the years I have added another 100 handguns to my collection but that old Ruger is my favorite and has a place of honor in my gun safe.

The SBH is one of the finest SA's ever made for toughness and durability. When I retired my 29 from IHMSA I replaced it on the line with this: It has slammed a lot of steel over the years. Greg

My first handgun was a S&W model 27 with a 5" barrel. It was like new with a presentation case. It shot like "a house a'fire" but stupidly, I sold it years ago.

My first handgun was a used SBH that I traded my Remington 788 .308 for. It was an accurate rifle and would shoot 1 MOA if I did my job right but the crazy magazine design only gave you 3 rounds and was always popping out while hunting. I wanted a handgun and was too young (17) to buy one in a store so I traded the 788 for the SBH plus $100 cash (not bad deal). The SBH had actually been unprofessionally shortened to 5 1/2 so when the front sight flew off one day (imagine reacquiring a sight picture with no front sight suddenly) about half the $100 came in handy for a local gunsmith to re-silver solder and recrown the barrel. I sold it for $275 and used the money with my high school graduation checks to buy a Randall Service Model (which I still have...they were just at the end of their death throes) which my Mom signed for (straw-woman purchase) and I still have and will never sell.

Those Straw-Mom buyers are a hoot! Shows what Motherhood is all about. My first XP100 was bought by my my ex-wife at a TG&Y store back in 1977 as an X-mas gift.. It is still a shooter!! LOL Greg

I finally understood the depths of a mother's love when she signed for my first lower receiver (SGW) when I was 15 in 1984. Of course I had already prepaid for it at the little gunshop owned by the retired Air Force O6 / WWII combat pilot. A pistol was a bridge too far until the end of high school. This was kinda like my first car.....a '65 VW bug that my little brothers and I showed up with one afternoon after trading it for our HO-scale train set.

The Randall was followed by a pitted and abused Ruger Mark I that I paid $50 for. It wouldn't stop jamming despite completely disassembling it and trying all types of ammo so I exchanged for a beautiful used S&W 18 .22lr which I still have (paid $125 for including credit for the Ruger). My next pistol was a 4 inch S&W 66 from the same little shop. I had a used 686 on layaway but the day before I picked it up the local PD came to the shop to get it because it had been stolen. I regret years later giving the 66 to my brother on his 21st birthday and him not offering to sell it to me when he needed cash during college.
