I'm new to the forum and have a question on 6.8. Looking to build a 18" and I was wondering peoples thought on the gas port. Is mid-length or rifle better. I have 5.56 18" with rifle length and also a 16" with carbine. Like the 18" set-up but not sure on the 6.8 what is better? Thanks, Moe

Thanks, Moe For anything in 6.8 longer than a 14 inch barrel midlength all the way. Some guys with the longer barrels 20+ are shooting with rifle length. But 18 really still needs a midlength.

Here is another spin on this. 16" or 18" barrel length? I'm still in the working this project out phase so any input on it would be great! I want to keep it some what light but still get the longer range and accuracy out of it. Thanks, Moe

Having shot and owned both I'll tell ya I went back to a 16 inch. Only because I cant do an NFA item right now.
The velocity change from 18 to 16 is very negligible. The 6.8 spc and it's current design of chamber does better in terms of velocity in 12 to 16 inch barrels.
I like the 16" barrels and I ordered the new bhw light weight profile to test and determine if it's what I'm looking for in a hunting rifle. The next choice from previous styles was the recon profile. 18s are good too though. But between a 16 and 18 I'd prefer the 16.

Brandon, Thanks for the help again. While were at it how is the recoil difference in them? Going 16" could shave a little more weight off I guess. Just looking for a rifle to set-up other them 5.56. At this point just kind of a plinker with more Umph! May go do a hog hunt someday with it as they are moving this way.

Obviously more recoil than a 556 but negligible. It's a subjective thing that recoil is. I think it's a bit more realized with an a2 stock due to the metal on the butt compared to a stock with a rubber butt pad. Just my opinion.
If I was sitting in a covered area where I'm supported or prone the 18 would've worked fine for me but I hunt box blinds and ground blinds so a set of shooting sticks are my rests and a lighter gun is more preferable.

Hey Moe, If you really not sure about the Recoil of the 6.8 in a 16'' or 18'' we could set up a time & you could test drive one of mine...

Swag, Thanks for the offer may have to take you up on that sometime! Recoil really isn't a issue more curious then anything I guess.

The 6.8 is an interesting cartridge. One of them is: Your looking at about 50fps difference between 16" & 18" & a few ounces of barrel weight. That's about it.

Rifle length fluted if you want some additional speeds with the best bullets you can find. That is the hard part in 6.8. Anyway either way would be ok for 99% of the folks if the objective is short to mid range hunting. Thanks.

I have multiple 6.8 rifles in 20", 18" and 16".
Shooting from a bench I have observed no discernible difference in accuracy using SSA 110 Pro Hunters. All have been .50" - .75 " rifles at 100 yds.
The barrel length I grab most often has been the 16" with the 18" and 20" rifles sitting in the safe.

I would stick with a mid-length 18" As some said the difference is marginal like 50fps but still a very versatile and manegeable. Get a light profile for hunting but nothing of less diameter than the gas block under the handguard. The midlength standard profile in 18" would be my first choice but the 16" would do too. Cheers, E.

While talking length is there any thoughts on target crown or threads for a 16 inch barrel to be used for hunting?

While talking length is there any thoughts on target crown or threads for a 16 inch barrel to be used for hunting? Either way but if you plan on putting a brake on it and adding two inches on a hunting rifle I would not bother and would add two inches of real, usable, barrel length vs the muzzle device. YMMV Greg
