Hello all,
Just found out about BHW today and already a fan... and planning an AR build around the M4 profile barrel. Some questions:
Why have I never seen a "blacked-out" stainless steel barrel before, and how does the finish compare/stand up compared to the normal milspec finish on "normal" barrels?
Why (besides 'cause I live in the desert) haven't I heard of anyone doing smooth-bore rifling before, except in my H&K P7 9mm pistol, in which it is AWESOME?
I read somewhere here that the 1:8 ratio is good for all conventional 5.56/.223 bullet weights. I'm no ballistics expert but would love to see a comparison chart between it and button rifled 1:7 ~ 1:9 barrels at different weights and velocities.
I'm also curious about the differences between stainless and the other barrel flavors available in terms of thermal expansion rate/percentage, thermal mass, friction coefficient, rigidity, etc. Again, it's mostly academic curiosity.
And then there's this: I have a friend back in NY who is going for his first AR. I convinced him to build a kit, and when I found out about BHW products I strongly suggested he look into it, but thanks to the policy monkeys, he needs a ban-compliant barrel. Will such an item (in M4 5.56 configuration) be available?
Thanks for your time. -Cutter
PS: I really think if I see the term "muzzle break" one more time I am going to scream!!

I can answer some of your questions ( I think) and no I am not a BHW employee or staff member at all.... I've never heard of "smooth bore", but in terms of the polygonal rifling, HK, and glock both use it in current production firearms. I believe that a ban compliant barrel is already available, since all you need is to have it no-threaded ie: target crowned correct? I use a 1-8 twist in my varmint rig and prefer the heavy bullets, (77gr) the 1-8, and 1-7's should stabilize the mid to heavy weight bullets, where the 1-14, is made for lightweight bullets and the 1-9 is supposed to be a happy medium. Hope this helps I'm sure others will be along shortly to set me straight and help you as well

The 1 in 8 that BHW produces will stabilize everything up to a 80gr VLD or Amax or SMK. 1 in 7 for 90gr. and up.

tools,
I can't wrap my head around 'polygonal' as a descriptor for rifling without the normal right-angled channels, but it's what I meant by smooth-bore rifling. Yes, for NY he'd need an unthreaded muzzle.
R Johnson, I guess I shan't be disappointed then... definitely don't have anything heavier than 80gr.
Kizmit, I'm currently waiting on a kit I ordered that includes a BHW barrel, and if I like it half as much as I think I will, you will definitely be getting some publicity from me.
Thanks everyone.

know that there are lots of factors that go into a shot. What is the max range for shooting a Coyote? Is it reasonable to be able to shoot 500 yards shot?

Thanks Master Yoda, I was aprehensive about trying to put together a AR 15 from a lower that I purchase. I have not recieved the upper that I purchased from Gun broker that utilizes a BHW barrell in the built. I have not been around the AR platform before. Hopefully in my asking of simple questions I don't offend anyone. I only seek knowleadge from more experienced AR experts. In the shotgunning experience that I have I found the semi auto allowed me to focus on the shot. Hope to incorporate AR platform into deer hunting.

Arnewbie The Brownells web site has lot of informative videos on the AR. If you're somewhat mechanical and pay attention they'll help you build an AR from parts.

Agreed, It has been amazing with using the web and Utube I was able to put together the lower in a morning. It gave me a good understanding to the simplicity of the AR lower. I can see how it can and most likely be addictive. Wife will be overjoyed one more questionable habit in her mind.
The big thing is trying to figure out was good and bad with builds. Granted that its still personal choices but........... Kind of cool to network with others and get ideas on what recommendation they have from past experiences......
Thanks ARNewbie
