Just heard a rumor from multiple different sources at a gun shop the other day and was wondering if anyone else out there had heard anything. A couple of gentleman were saying that the DOD has put the lake city ammunition plant into high gear churnin' out 30 million 5.56 rounds a day (again these numbers are heresay from 2 different gentlemen in the gun shop last week) for the military and that they would be producing none that would be available to the general public during this time. Just wondering if anyone out there has heard this or knows anything. I'm wondering if we will start seeing a shortage and/or increase in price with 5.56/223 with all of this craziness.

Since we get the left over non-DOD grade stuff I'm sure there will be plenty in the pipeline. AS to 30 MILLION rounds per day do the math on that. During the last craziness there were 3 MILLION rounds per day of 22 RF being produced. Think of the quantities of components that would take. Powder alone would be on the order of 109,000 +or - pounds/day. 54 1/2 tons. One box car full/day. Bullets would be around 240,000 pounds or 120 tons/day and the cases would be about 420,000 pounds or 220 tons/day. I can't imagine what the shipping would be for that!! I would be inclined to believe an ORDER for 30,000,000 rounds but that would be over a pretty good length of time. Greg

So my math tells me they have to make 4,000, 000 rounds of 5.56/day every day for a year to meet those numbers. I feel sorry for the stock boys. Greg

The logistics and supply chain for the distribution is amazing to see. Hopefully we'll see some over runs....

Yeah we will see the out of spec stuff as red box federal. This is why you can open a new box and find several primer sealer colors. Not, very consistant.

Hope so, and hope the prices return to at least close to where they were, but have heard that the price of lead is increasing due to regulations in manufacturing.

Hope so, and hope the prices return to at least close to where they were, but have heard that the price of lead is increasing due to regulations in manufacturing. The market price of lead has gone up over 20% in the past couple months. It had been just under or near $2000 per metric ton and is now trading at over $2400. But that could be bullet makers bidding on materials...
