I'm just curious what kind of luck you guys are having with lighter bullets in your BHW barrels. I didn't pay much attention when I picked mine up and realized that it is a 1:8. I'd like to shoot 53s, 55, and 60s but the twist seems (in theory) to be a little too fast.
Any chance BHW will be (or does) offer a slower twist in the 223?
Thanks!

You will be fine with the barrel and the weights you want to shoot.

It is always an issue of theory vs practice on this one. The 1:8 might not shoot bug holes with the 40's but it won't shoot shotgun patterns either.
I have new 1:8 that I will be working with and if it doesn't shoot 1/2 MOA with the lightweight varmint bullets I like I will be shocked beyond belief.
What few light, 52's, I've put through it with zero load development have hovered at at that are already so when I set down and get serious it should really shine.
Greg
PS: Keep us posted as you do your load development.

Thanks guys! I should (fingers crossed) be doing a little testing next week. I haven't got the 53vmax in but I have a bunch of the 60s.
I'm REALLY hoping that it will shoot my load of 26gr Varget/60gr Vmax. I load these for all my other 223s and it would be great to just have one load!! We'll see....

If you are like me and like immediate gratification and success go buy a box of Sierra 63 grain Semi-points. They have never failed to shoot lights out in any of my 223's. I don't understand why other than it appears to have a short shank for that weight but man do they shoot. Greg

I plan to acquire a barrel with polygonal rifling from BHW. I am aware that these barrels have higher velocities then conventional rifling in most other barrels. I will be shooting 5.56x45 NATO 55gr federal and possibly some 62gr in the future. I was wondering if the higher velocity would affect the twist rate in such I would need to get a 1:8" or even a 1:9" instead of a 1:7" 16" mid length gas system barrel so not to over or under stabilize the bullet.

Welcome to the board. First off you don't want a 1:7 for 55's. Thise are for heavy bullets or long tracers. You would be better served with a 1:8. If I wanted to shoot nothing over 69 I would go 1:9. Overstabilized is kind of a non-issue. I'm shooting 50's at 3750 in a 1:8 22X68. No issues other than it's a bit fast for VMAX. I switched to Noslers wndcall was well. Our barrels are on average about 100 FPS quicker so the disparity is not that much of a problem. Greg

Cool man, Thank you very much for the information. Now all I need to do is figure out my profile and I'm ready to order my barrel. I am thinking a standard profile if it is only about 2 - 3 1/2 oz more than a lightweight barrel can you confirm this?
Current set up: Anderson lower, Geissele SSA-E trigger, BCM BCG, Spikes T-2 buffer, David Tubb's CS buffer spring, Magpul CTR stock, and a Magpul MS3 1-2 point sling. This rifle will be for HD/SHTF and I will be purchasing a 300 BLK barrel in the future.

Cool, thank you so much for the help. I have been doing so much research on all of this and can't find anything on it besides speculation. I cannot wait to hear about what you come up with.

It looks like I'll be getting a standard profile barrel then. I'm glad I came here and thanks again for helping me.
