I picked up some 80gr "pistol bullets". These are supposed to be shorter than a regular 80gr.
I want to shoot them for deer and need help with powder suggestions. They will be coming out of an 18" tube.
My only REQUIREMENT for this is that the powder be temperature stable. I hunt really big temp swings.
I'm thinking: H322 Benchmark 8202 Varget
Which one do you think should (in theory, no chrono and no money) give me the best speed?
Thanks for the help!

Varget is to slow. Go with 8208. 18" tube should get you up to at least 2750 without an issue out of a BHW barrel. Now the only fly in the ointment is you said 'PISTOL" bullet. Are you talking IHMSA pistol bullets? The jackets may be a bit heavy for proper expansion on them. What brand are they? Accurate Arms has lots of magazine length data for deer quality bullets in the 6X45 and I have been shooting up to 87's and 90's at mag length out of my BHW 6X45 and had no problems with it. You might take a look at their stuff. Lots of data out there on the regular length big boys. Greg PS: Benchmark is quicker but I don't know about temperature issues on it. You might look at H4895 also as it is an EXTREME powder also like the other two.

Benchmark is also an extreme powder. It was my powder of choice for my 18" barrel 6X45

Decisions decisions....
Thanks for the help guys!
As for the bullets, I believe they are discontinued Hornadys. They were sold as a "single shot pistol bullet". I believe they have a little thinner jacket to open up as <243 speeds. I figured with the smaller case size of the 6x45 and they 18" barrel these would be perfect.

That sounds interesting. I wonder if Hornady would give you some info on them? The shorter barrel would be closer to an IHMSA gun speed. Greg

I haven't measured them... I had to leave on a 2 month rotation the day that they came in the mail.... I was able to find a little info on them the other day and for some reason my google search is coming up blank now. Who knows?!
I'm holding out hope that they're gonna work GREAT!

The 80 grain Hornady SSP bullets where designed with a thinner nose jacket to aid in expansion when shot out of 10-14" pistol barrels common on the Contender frames, hence the SSP (Single-Shot Pistol) designation.
If you push them too hard out of that 18" barrel, you may not get the penetration results that you will be happy with (i.e. you will end up with overexpansion).
So, my advise is don't hod-rod them.
Other than that, they are great bullets that I wish Hornady would reintroduce. My 6TCU Contender barrel wishes that as well.
Oh, and to answer your question, if you don't mind the muzzle blast, H335 is another good powder to try. My 6TCU likes this one quite a bit.
