So here I am. I am going to finish my AR build that will be my deer/hog gun. I live in south central Texas in the live oak trees and hogs have taken over. There are parts of the build that are a known variable:
Mega matched upper/lower set BHW 18" barrel Young MFG side charge handle 300-350 yd maximum shot
What I can't decide is 6.8 x 43 or 264 LBC.
I reload and can reload either cartridge but I do like the high BC of the 264. I have a 260 Rem that's great on hogs/deer but that follow up shot with a bolt is a lil tough when the pigs start to scatter.
This is not intended to be a smear fest on either caliber. Looking for real world thoughts. I researched so much the wife got mad and said get help.
Thanks,
Charlie

The 264 would do you good for what you want. I think it is a tad better than the 6.8. I just like the slightly smaller bullets and better BC.
If you want a real honker, and are a relaoder, go with the 243 LBC and don't look back. I think it is actually a step up from the 264 from what I can figure out with all the data and the feedback from the guys on here that are shooting them.

Charlie. Welcome man!! I'm in bandera county and work in frio and la Salle counties. Hunt some in utopia and sabinal area.
I am a strong 6.8 shooter. The 6.5 bullets I like but in Grendel there's not one that I absolutely fell in love with like the 6.8. One mans opinion. Good ti have you on the board man. Welcome.

When my wife sais I need professional help, she generally is talking about the number of weapons we keep in the house.
Welcome to the forum.
In my opinion, either caliber will perform well for the applications you stated. The 264LBC (originally 6.5 Grendel) was designed as a long range and hunting cartridge while the 6.8 SPC was designed by USSOCOM as self defense/man hunting round. Pigs have and will continue to be harvested with both of these calibers. I don't think the pigs would mind at all which of these calibers you use.
Personally, I would lean towards the 264LBC because if you already reload for your 260 Rem; then you already have in stock the bullets, powder, primers, bore brush and cleaning kits to properly maintain a 264LBC caliber. You don't need to go out and purchase all those things for yet another caliber.....That is just my opinion.
Good luck on your search.

Brandon what loads are you having the best "knockdown" with. I pulled the loading data from Hogdon and Accurate and the 6.8 has higher velocity's for the same bullet weight.......Am I just over thinking this?

Since we moved down to Bandera/Pipe Creek I can't reload anymore. However the 100 accubond loaded by Ssa and the 85 and 95 gr barnes loads from Wilson combat are my favorite. For yotes and deer I shoot the Sierra Prohunters. The new hornady 120sst I hadnt gotten great results yet out of the bhw barrel but hope to find out how well this new barrel does as soon as I get it worked out.

I'm more than happy with the results on both pig and deer w/ 6.8. My hunting recipe: 29.7gr 10X, 2.30 COAL, 95gr TTSX, CCI41 primers and SSA brass. This works great in both my 16" BHW and 18" Bison barreled uppers.... YMMV You need PRI mags to get that COAL.

Charlie,
At 300 yards or so either round would work well. May a slight edge for the 264LBC because of the better ballistic coefficient. If shooting longer distances the 264 definitely gets the nod. Just my 2 cents worth.

That's why I am so torn here. I hunt at my place and the maximum shot could be 200 but I get invited to go to west Texas and hunt and it could be 400 there.........I don't want to have to rebuild another upper. This one is it for now.

I think if you go with the Grendel/264 LBC you will be happy enough that the 6.8 will become just a distant memory in your wants lists. Greg

I'm leaning toward the 264LBC but its not enough lean quite yet to hit it. GL are you using a 264 (6.5)?

Greg If I want a 6.5 bullet to shoot I'll stick with the 260 rem. So it is a matter of variety that is afoot then! Then I would say play salmon and be the first kid on the block with a 243 LBC. I too understand the desire to have something different than what is in the rack. I built the first 6X45 IPSC rifle in Oklahoma because I wanted "different" and wanted to have more KD energy down range for heavy steel targets. Greg

Greg If I want a 6.5 bullet to shoot I'll stick with the 260 rem. When you get that to fit in AR 15 frame, let us know. I would be first in line to get one. In the mean time The 264 LBC is still flatter shooting than the 6.8 I am not biased in any way I own 1 of each.
